107'12 used this activity in their last session to remind the class to continue Peer Supporting one another. As each person takes turn to speak, a ball of yarn will be passed around.
-The end result would be a spider web. -When the “web” is completed, PSLs will ask one of the Year 1s to pluck a section of the web. -PSLs to ask Year 1s if they can feel the vibrations. Most people should feel the vibrations. -This example illustrates how everyone is interconnected and our actions can positively or negatively affect many other people. Classic 103'12 and 107'12 used this activity during the first session and Peer Support session respectively. The year 1s found this activity quite entertaining and most of them had fun. It encourages trust and unity among them as they learn how to rely and support one another in this activity. Sec 1s will be asked to go to the field or the empty space beside the J block staircases and asked to form a circle. In that circle, the Sec 1s will have to figure a way to have everyone sitting on each others lap as shown in the picture above.
Tips:
Classic used this meaningful and fun activity to introduce concepts on Leadership. Be sure to have a large, open space that has few dangers!
Classic 107'12 used this during the session on Resilience. It was a great way to get those quieter ones to speak up. Pre session preparation
-PSLs to paste the quotes on resilience in the classroom before PSL session, and take note of where they placed the notes During the session - PSLs to inform the class that as they should have noticed, there are 13 wallet-sized quotes pasted all around the classroom. They are to hunt for the quotes and when they have all 13 quotes, they are to give sheets of paper to the PSLs. -PSLs will get 13 preselected people to read out the quotes and show them to the class. (PSLs will call our their register numbers as those it was by random choice) - PSLs will ask the Year 1s what they think the quotes are about, then ask them what they think the topic for the day is. Classic 107'12 used this activity during the session on Peer Pressure
Classic 107'12 created a pledge card for their class to sign, after the session on Peer Pressure & Bullying I, ____________ Pledge:
Classic 107'12 used this activity in the session on Peer Pressure. The activity exposes them to peer pressure by making them choose a side. 1. Paste 2 different coloured tape (about 4m) parallel on the floor to create a line separating the room.
2. PSLs introduce the game to the Sec 1s, instructing them to move to a point on the line to indicate where they stand on a particular issue. 3. Have powerpoint slides which give 2 choices, eg. Chocolate or Strawberry? 2 pictures, which one do you like more? For example - move to the blue side of the room if you like chocolate, the red side if you like strawberry. This meaningful activity was used by Classic 107'12 on the topic of Self Management 1. PSLs will bring a big container and objects such as rocks, squished paper balls (to be smaller than rocks), pens and beads to be used to fill up the container.
2. PSLs will then inform the Year 1s that they are to help us fill up the container completely with the above-mentioned objects by giving the PSLs’ directions. They will be given 3-4 minutes to do so. 3. If Year 1s are too shy to speak up, PSLs will prompt them by asking “Shall we put ____ in first?” 4. If the Year 1s are unable to complete the activity within the time limit, the PSLs will show the Year 1s how to fill the container completely with the given objects. The only way for everything to fit is to place the objects in this order: rocks, squished paper balls, pens and finally beads. The objects symbolizes the activities and people around us. The rock represents the more important things in our lives, the squished paper balls and the pens represent the less important things in our life. In order to manage ourselves well, we have to set our priorities, and do the more important stuff first, before proceeding on to the less important stuff. As the beads fill in the gaps, likewise the insignificant stuff can be done during our free time. Classic 103'12 used this activity for the session on Leadership. PSLs are to prepare coloured cards and each student is to have 2 cards each. PSLs will explain the instructions of this activity: 1. PSLs will divide the white board into 2 columns- Strength and Weakness. 2. With the cards distributed, Y1s are to write their strengths as a leader or a person in general on one card and their weakness on the other. They are given 5 minutes to do so. 3. When they are finished writing, they would paste their cards onto the white board. (PSLs can also participate) 4. Y1s can walk around to see the cards of their other classmates and paste a small sticker on the card if they are able to empathize with it. 5. After the activity, PSLs are to explain the rationale behind this activity:
From the Classic: "I though this activity was good as the Y1s not only reflected on themselves and a leader, but were able to see and reflect on the qualities a leader should have it also gave them a chance to see what weakness themselves and other had in common, and this was good in showing them that weaknesses are normal and everyone has them. They had fun pasting the stickers on the cards they empathized with and we could really see them relating to each other better after knowing each others strengths and weaknesses." Classic 103'12 used this activity for the session on Self Respect. It shows the year 1s that each of them have special qualities, and remind them that they should be proud to be them. 1. Each person will receive half a piece of A4 paper saying “I Am eSPECIALLY…” she will then go around class and let her classmates fill up the paper with positive values. 2. The Y1s have to go around the class and let her classmates fill up the paper with positive values that they feel describes her (PSLs can contribute too J 3. After the activity, the Y1s will take off the paper and read the nice things their friends and PSLs said. From the classic: "This activity may be recycled, but I feel it is still very meaningful and sweet. It is somewhat like a compliment fest where you go around writing nice things about other people. But reading the nice things people think of you really gives a nice boost to one’s self esteem." |
