Classic 102'12 used this activity during the session on Self Management. Two J/PSLs to act out a skit for the class.
2 personalities to be portrayed: A student striving for perfection, must get full marks for all tests, must be capable in all sports and instruments, lessons for dance, gu zheng, piano, vocal lessons, basketball, etc. End result: stressed out, little rest, dissatisfied with self, low self-esteem, may get jealous when others do better than her. A student striving for excellence, knows what she is capable of, sets achievable and reasonable goals for self, goes for piano and netball lessons. End result: satisfied with self as manages to reach her targets, does well in her piano and netball lessons, well-rounded (challenges herself yet not unreasonably), happy with herself. What is the difference between excellence and perfection? Which is more important? 102'12 Classic used during a session on Class Spirit. during the Here's what they said: "This activity allowed the students to think of the traits they each valued the most, hence serving as an effective tool to bring across the topic to the students. Also, since it required them to walk around, it was engaging (:"
Classic 101'12 used this activity during their last PSL session. They said,"It seems meaningful read letters written to themselves as a Y1 as it is very personalized and this also allows themselves to see how they have grown since Y1 " Write a letter to yourself, the year 1 who just entered RGS a year ago. What would you like to tell her?
Some guiding questions:
Classic 101'12 used this childhood energizer during their last session. The year 1s really enjoyed the activity and had fun! 1) PSLs gather the year 1s to explain the instructions to them.
2) One PSL will be selected to be 'Mr Wolf'. She will face the whiteboard while the year 1s will be standing at the back of the classroom. The PSL will say "What is the time Mr Wolf?" and turn back to face the year 1s at the end of the question. The year 1s will have to move towards Mr Wolf when his back is faced towards them but stay motionless when he turns facing them. The aim of the game is to get as close to Mr Wolf as possible and tap him without getting caught. After being tapped, Mr Wolf will start chasing after the year 1s until they run back to the starting line. 3) The year 1s that are caught moving or caught during the chase will have to do a forfeit (to be decided by the class). Classic 101'12 screened this videos during the session on Peer Support. This activity allowed Y1s to learn the meaning of peer support and still allow them to relax and be entertained by the cute videos. This is a Pingu movie which shows the friendship between Pingu and his friends and helping a friend when in need. This is a clip from Wizards of Waverly Place: Wizards vs Angels which shows different kinds of peer support, for example keeping a friend away from bad influences.
At the end of the screening session, PSLs can ask the year 1s to sum up what the clip was about and link it to peer support. A soft toy will be thrown around randomly and the person who catches the soft toy will be the only one to speak at that point of time. (Pingu shows how friends treasure, care for, and support each other. Wizards of the Waverly Place shows a different kind of peer support where friends keep each other from bad influences.) This is a quiz that Classic 101'12 conducted to let their Year 1s reflect on their level of self respect for themselves. For each question, State Agree, Agree slightly or Disagree
1. The way I feel about myself is greatly influenced by what other people think of me. 2. I don't handle criticism very well, being criticised makes me feel like I am useless. 3. I am comfortable with asking and accepting help from other people. 4. I accept the compliments that people give me very well. 5. I don't like looking in the mirror because I don’t like my appearance. 6. I find it difficult to admit when I don't understand something. 7. I find it difficult to correct people, so I tend not to say anything when they misunderstand me. 8. I have confidence in myself and believe that I am a person of worth. 9. I have no problem expressing and communicating my thoughts and feelings about issues. 10. I am envious of people who have what I don’t. 11. I am never quite satisfied with the results I get, no matter what I do Explanations to the quiz answers can be found here: http://www.self-esteem-school.com/self-esteem-quiz.html Classic 101'12 used this game in the session on Leadership.
Classic 101'12 used this impactful activity to demonstrate the effects of Bullying & Peer Pressure 1) PSLs start to pump up a balloon. Other PSLs explain that each pump of air is like one act of bully or peer pressure. The balloon gets bigger and bigger, and it will soon burst.
2) PSLs explain that it is unhealthy when a victim keeps all her feelings bottled up like this. Also, she would end up getting more and more hurt. When you go for help, (PSLs take balloon off the pump) it is like slowly letting the air out. This actually helps the victim a lot and the balloon will not burst. 3) PSLs tell y1s that PSLs themselves, Form Teachers, HOY, School Counselor, Head Of Career Education are there for them. PSLs emphasize that Y1s should not bottle everything to themselves, and can of course approach them (PSLs) too (even by texting, facebook etc.) Classic 101'12 used this simple but meaningful activity to let the year 1s to see the importance of their various responsibilities and prioritize them. 1. PSLs ask the Y1s to get their writing materials, and draw a jigsaw puzzle consisting of pieces of different sizes, some larger and some smaller.
2. PSLs get them to write down their different responsibilities/commitments in the different pieces based on how important they are in their life. The biggest jiqsaw puzzle pieces represent the most prominent/dominant responsibilities/commitments and the smaller ones represent the less important and minor ones. 3. While Year 1s are completing their tasks, PSLs remind them of various responsibilities that they might overlook, eg, responsibility to family, to oneself in terms of health, to others in terms of social relationship, and to society. 4. If any piece is missing, the jigsaw (ourselves) would not be complete. So we cannot neglect areas in our life, but prioritize and mange them. Classic 107'12 used this in their last session as a fun and meaningful way for everyone to reflect. It was very sweet when the Year 1s hugged whilereturned each other's airplanes in a chain and fostered the sense of togetherness. - PSLs will give each Year 1 a piece of coloured paper and ask them to sit in a circle.
- Year 1s will have to write down answers to the three questions that will be asked. - Once they are done, they will fold it into a paper plane and write a pen name on the plane. - The planes will then be thrown inside the circle, and each Year 1 is supposed to take another person’s paper plane. - Then, one person will read out what was written on the plane she received, and then call out the pen name of the person who wrote it. She will return her the plane and give her an encouraging hug. - This process goes on with the person who’s plane has been read out, as she will have to read out what was written on the plane she received. This will go on until everyone’s plane has been read out. |
